Artist's Description

I enjoyed creating this painting of Shangri-La. It is my vision of where I want to go, my great place, my retreat and my paradise.
Shangri-La is a fictional place described in the 1933 novel Lost Horizon by British author James Hilton. Hilton describes Shangri-La as a mystical, harmonious valley, gently guided from a lamasery, enclosed in the western end of the Kunlun Mountains. Shangri-La has become synonymous with any earthly paradise, and particularly a mythical Himalayan utopia a permanently happy land, isolated from the outside world. In the novel Lost Horizon, the people who live at Shangri-La are almost immortal, living years beyond the normal lifespan and only very slowly aging in appearance. The word also evokes the imagery of exoticism of the Orient. FineOilArtbyTony Thank you for visiting my art shop. I found oil painting to be an enjoyable hobby and a great pass time. Franz Hals had a technique of using both a palette knife and brush. I found this to be a good practice for me and I carried this technique throughout all of my oil paintings. I am self taught and studied the works and techniques of Franz Hals, Judith Leyster, Pissarro, Turner, Van Gogh, Corot, Rembrandt, Degas, Manet, Rubens, Caravaggio, Da Vinci and Michaelangelo. I am inspired by Rembrandt and Caravaggio. As...
